Givin' my weekend some postin' LOVE

This past weekend C and I decided to get away so we planned a semi last-minute trip up to Liguria, which is home of the Italian Riviera. It's only about a 3-4 hour train ride, depending on which town you visit.
The above photo is from the train station at Viareggio, which is sadly where last week a freight train exploded and killed and injured a number of people. You can see here the black burn marks that the fire left.
Our train stopped in Viareggio on the way to Camogli, which was our first destination. We got on the EARLY (7:55am) train on Saturday morning and were in Camogli by 11:30.

After dropping our things off at the hotel, we went directly to the beach. Ahh.. check out that background. It was perfect weather- sunny but with a nice breeze.

This is us chillin' in front of the hotel. You can't tell in the photo, but the sea is directly behind us.

This is a picture of me what I do best (pose for photos) in the cute little town of Camogli. It was great because it wasn't as turisty as the Cinque Terre.

How can I forget to mention the food? On Saturday night we ate fish, fish, and more fish. I started off with mussels and then had spaghetti with pesto. Chris had this mixed fish plate that was delicious.

Behind our hotel there were walking trails with lush trees that led to Portofino and other towns along the coast. We explored them some and then opted to take a train to our next destination. All I had were my flimsy sandals and my plastic-like flip flops and I know that they wouldn't have been enough to support my feet.

This is yet another picture of Camogli.

One of the most striking things you'll see in the region of Liguria is these vibrant purple flowers. They are EVERYwhere and are gorgeous.

Another favorite about Liguria is their delicious bread, focaccia. This is where THE best focaccia is, people. I actually ate JUST focaccia for both breakfast and lunch on Monday!

On the train from Camogli to Monterosso on Sunday evening, we scored and got a room all to ourselves. Score! No whiney kids or gross smelling people to share the room with!

When we got to Monterosso, we went directly to Gina's house but not before we caught a quick game of bocci ball. My favorite is the old man who's behind you see who is in his speedo with his socks AND jogging shoes on. Awesome.

Gina's new place was so relaxing. She had a huge garden amongst olive trees with views of the sea.

Her kitten, Marley, provided the entertainmant of the evening as he skiddishly ran circles around us all night.

Gina's hubbie Claudio made spaghetti with clams. All I have to say about that is "WOW."

All in all it was a GREAT long weekend. We had three beach days on Saturday, Sunday, and Monday so we had plenty of time to relax and just enjoy the seaside.
