Three Pics for Three Readers

Here a few of the many pictures I've taken in the past month.
This is of my cousin, me, and my friend Julio Gonzalez. (She doesn't look Hispanic, does she? Ohh but she is.) She and our other friend Becky had a fun Christmas themed party at the beginning of December. It was a blast!

This is from Katz's deli in New York City. I ate an amazing reuben sandwich and had some delicious pickles. *YUM.*

Here's a photo of C, our new friend Julian, and me doing the Rocky pose at the top of the ?__ steps in Philadelphia. (This is where that scene was filmed in the movie).
Have a great Christmas Eve and Christmas with your loved ones. I'll post more pictures tomorrow, as well.

One Month

We've been back for one month.

Thirty-two days, to be exact. In the past thirty-two days, we've:

1. slept in eleven different beds/ air mattresses
2. visited eight different states
3. eaten out WAY too many meals for being jobless (yikes)
4. seen LOTS of friends, old and new
5. gone on six different interviews total
6. ate our first Philly cheesesteak
7. C saw his first live football game (the Eagles vs. Redskins)
8. had Thanksgiving meal with my family, the first time in five years

Now we are in northern California at C's parents, playing the waiting game on the jobs and trying to relax for Christmas.

I'll try to post pics as we go and play catch up eventually. The good news is that the drive across the country went smoothly, we are healthy, and now are with family. :)

Whirlwind

I know I haven't posted in a few weeks. We obviously made it okay to Dallas, where we spent Thankgiving week with my family. Then we flew to Philadelphia and visited a friend, then drove to New York. Now we are about to take off to Boston. After our east coast trip, we'll fly back to Dallas, where we'll pack up our Uhaul and DRIVE to San Francisco. I've already started peeking my head into some of the boxes at my parents, which are filled with wedding presents from May 2007. So, when we finally move into an apartment it will be the first time we use most of these presents! *BIG grin*

I haven't uploaded any photos yet, but before we take off on our Uhaul trip I'll make sure I post some. I have to run now, but just wanted to say hi!

The BEST Saturday night EVER (well at least in a long time anyway)

This past Saturday night we organized a dinner with twenty of our friends to combine two celebrations: a dear friends' birthday AND our last Saturday night in Italy.

We went to the restaurant in Panzano where C works and had a BLAST.
Here is Chris with his boss Dario.

I finally got to meet the men he's been talking about for these past six months. It was nice to finally put a face with a name. These guys are Dante and Nicola'.

There was TONS of meat.

And even more smiles.

A lot of the people who came we have known since we moved here, over four years ago!

We will miss them all.

This is a great group shot of (almost) everbody.

Once again, there was TONS of meat.

We couldn't have asked for a better "send off" to the States!
Now we are preparing for "send off" #2, which is tonight and at our favorite local hangout. There will be yet again more goodbyes and hopefully very few tears.

Staying Warm

I treated myself to one last purchase in Firenze.
Do you like my new coat?
It's dark gray, almost knee length, has an interesting collar, and a funky side zip. Love.it.

Blog

I guess I'll have to change my blog description from "an every day glimpse into our lives abroad" to..........? Any ideas? "Our lives on this side of the pond?" I don't know, but thinking about it stresses me out a tad.

Savour

This week, we are trying to savour our life in Florence for one last time. We don't know when we'll be back, so we really want to take everything in, little by little.
This includes one last glimpse at our neighborhood church. Isn't it just amazing?
(that's us in front, in case you missed it)
And how could we cross the Ponte Vecchio one last time without taking a picture?

Lastly, our favorite wine bar. *Sigh*
That cheese is just SO friggin' good.
And a glass of prosecco with my Lovie just hits the spot.

Only one more day of work, and then I've got two days to play before we take off!

Why November is Special to Me

This month, seven years ago, I met the love of my life. I'm slightly embarassed to post this photo because we both look so young and silly, and my eye is closed! And C looks so nervous.
This photo is from the very first time that C and I had ever really hung out. I had only met him one other time prior to this night. In this photo, we were at a Thanksgiving dinner at a friends' flat in Barcelona... in November of 2002. Thank goodness we both decided to move to Barcelona out of college, or we would have never met one another. Thanks, JC, for capturing this moment on camera!

Thanks, MZ

Thanks to MZ's post that ranted and raved about Gap 1969 jeans, I convinced myself that I had to try a pair. So I used my handy 30% off coupon AND the gift card KS got me for my birthday in August and got a pair of GAP jeans for next to nothin'.
I chose the "Sexy Boot" style and got a pair in dark gray.
I'm not sure how they'll fit, but next week when I'm home I will be able to try them on and take them back if need be.
Oh and P.S: I could really get used to shopping online every Friday! It just feels RIGHT.

Check. Check. Check.

Our house
We're checking things off the list for our move, which is in just one week!

Here are things we've done:

1. Sold printer and t.v
2. Sorted through the majority of our junk

3. Sold my bike
4. Sent six boxes home

5. Rented the Uhaul and notified our friends of our arrival(s)

6. Booked the hotel for New Mexico

Still to do:
1. Take books to used book store to sell back for credit (and give away some)

2. Write a few thank-you letters to peeps

3. PACK

4. Maybe load up one or two more boxes to ship

5. Eat LOTS of great Italian food

6. Give away baking/food/kitchen items

7. Rent/lease car for when we arrive in CA
8. Go SHOPPing tomorrow for a few Christmas presents and gifts for myself :)
*** P.S this is random but does anyone else have a girl crush on Mary Louise Parker? I love her.

It's Just an Address

View from our bedroom window

I started this entry in March when we finalized our decision to move back to the States. I saved since then and just remembered it tonight, when I started feeling nostalgic about our move. I usually don't divulge my emotions much on my blog because I like to keep it fun and light. That, and I'm a semi-private kind of a gal and don't always want the whole world knowing what I'm thinking. That being said, I think there are also times when it's healthy to talk out your emotions.

These roller coaster of emotions take over me when I think about our move to San Francisco: excited/thrilled/nervous/impatient/bittersweet/pensive/worried/..did I say nervous?

Excited/Thrilled: I can't wait to live in such an active city. I love that people in San Francisco actually live in the city. They experience it every day. People are outside, running, flying kites, walking their dogs. They're not cooped up in neighborhoods where they have to get in the car and drive to the closest supermarket or drugstore. You can walk everywhere if you want. Another plus is being on the Pacific;I've always wanted to live near the ocean. AND, the fact that Lake Tahoe is a mere four hour drive and Napa is an hour away is going to be awesome. Another plus is the diversity. Chinatown, Little Italy....my kind of place. San Francisco also has everything as far as scenery: mountains, hills, ocean, wine country. Okay enough of that- you get it. I'm pumped to live in such an awesome, lively city.

Impatient: I want us to have jobs NOW. I want an apartment NOW. But I need to really bring it down a notch and just go with it. I can only do so much.

Bittersweet: "A deluted mixture of sadness and happiness." It will be sad to say good bye to our friends we've made over the last four years. It will be really sad to say good bye to amazing Italian cuisine, too. :) BUT we've got about eight amazing friends in the Bay area, plus C's parents are near, and they are all anxiously awaiting our return.

Pensive: "The move" is all we can really think about. Where are we going to live? What kind of car/cell phone/insurance/apartment will be get? How long will it take to get everything (ALL those wedding presents that are still in boxes from 2007?) from Texas to California?

Worried: Are we crazy to move somewhere without jobs? Maybe. But people said the same exact thing when I moved to Barcelona out of college and didn't know a single soul. I ended up 1. finding a husband 2. finding an apartment and 3. finding a job. So I think I can handle this one. :) Plus, we've got C's family only two hours away, where we can stay as a base.

Nervous: See the following entry.

The feeling of not knowing where I belong has been weighing on my mind for awhile. As much as I know that moving back to the States is best for us at this point in our lives, I'm overwhelmed with the idea of knowing that I'll be experiencing "that" feeling again. "That" feeling is termed reverse culture-shock, which for those of you who are raising your eyebrows, really does exist. Reverse culture-shock is a true phenomenon for those who move back home after being in another country for a significant amount of time; it's when you're caught between two worlds and you don't know which one is yours. For people who have never lived abroad, it's impossible to grasp or even remotely understand. For the past four years, I've only gone to the States for maybe two to three weeks out of the year. The rest of the year we are here. As much as people can say or believe that it's "just an address," it's really not. It's a way of life that changes. Your day-to-day experiences completely change. Good-bye bike rides, hello cars! Forget the weekend trips to Switzerland, Rome, or Paris. Say hello to having travel across the world now to get anywhere.

And it's just not the little things. It's everything.

I know that when we move back, the reverse culture shock will hopefully pass in (hopefully) a few months. That's what I hear is the average, at least. The word on the street is that after a few months, "home" sucks you back in and sweeps you off your feet as if you were never gone. I wish I could fast-forward those few months and get it all over with already. Because it is NOT a fun feeling. It's awkward and uncomfortable. You feel like you dont' belong and it's just.so.weird. For a few months at least.

I'm SURE we'll be fine but you know, it's nice to get it off my chest. Thanks for listening, my Three Readers.

Toodles,
xoxoxo

New Year's Eve Outfit Ideas

Here are just a few of the many dresses I like on Modcloth's website.
They've got super funky dresses that scream "New Year's Eve!" I don't know what I'll be doing this NYE, but I know wherever I'll be I want to have a cute dress for the occasion!

Includes: - 50 minute Signature Facial ($69)
Microdermabrasion Polish Upgrade ($17)
Brow Wax ($20)
**gift cards and spa packages must be purchased by November 30, 2009
What a deal!

Sunday Stuff

So I started off my Sunday evening by making a batch of cupcakes.
Hey, I had to use up my cupcake mix before the move, so why not end my weekend on a positive note?
I also made this carrot and squash curry soup.
You thought this was my photo, right?
It's not. It's the image from Pioneer Woman Cooks, where I found the recipe.
This one's my photo. I used acorn squash instead of yellow squash.

Thes are the carrots, onions, and garlic before I added in the acorn squash.

Tah-dah! Sooo pretty, right?
Ha.
Overall, I have to say it was quite delicious. It was healthy (very few calories) and even better, filling. Try it!
* Besides cooking up a storm, C and I finalized our road trip plans. We were debating on when to leave Dallas and how many nights to stay in Phoenix and L.A, but we've now established an itinerary for the "UHAUL-ING it fromTexas to California Road Trip 2009," C & L style. We decided on one night in San Antonio (I know, I know.. it's a detour.. it's south and WAY not west but we have dear friends we must visit), one night in Las Cruces, New Mexico, two nights in Phoenix, and then two nights near Los Angeles. Finally, we will drive north and stay in Roseville one night, then San Francisco for another night, and THEN make our way to Santa Rosa to attend our dear friends' graduation party. On or around December 20th, we'll make our way to Monterey, where C's family is. Whew! That was stressful, just writing it all. But we've got it all worked out now, so it should be fun. I'm not sure how I feel about sitting in the uncomfortable Uhaul seats for 8+ hours, but we will have to make it work somehow. I guess it could be worse and we could be driving straight through without stopping. We will be staying with friends the entire time except for the one night in Las Cruces, where I just booked a hotel. We are glad that our friends have room for us and have welcomed us to stay with them. Thanks, friends!
* On Monday night I'm going to see the MJ documentary "This is It" and Tuesday I'm going to see a play that a friend is performing in, called "The Dumb Waiter." Saturday night we've got a big dinner planned for 22 friends in Panzano. Should be a great last full week in Florence!

Dear Refrigerator

Dear Lil' Fridge,

I'm gonna keep this lil' letter short because I don't want to sound like a brat. But I'll be happy to say "arrivederci" to you soon. It's been fun having you keep my food nice and cold, but I'm really ready to move on to a bigger fridge. Where I come from, fridges like you are used by kiddos in college or people who live in hotels. Not grown-ups who cook a lot and need tons of storage, like us. :)

Peace out, and I hope you enjoy the next tenants.
Love,
La Principessa

Our First Round of Good-byes

We started saying good-byes to certain people who we know we won't be seeing in the next few weeks. Today, I actually teared up at one of our agencies we work with because I started thinking about ALL the good-byes ahead of us. The first round of good-byes began on Tuesday night when we had dinner with two of C's co-workers. The guy on the right is about to move back to Japan after being here for over a year. (Sah-weet, now we have someone to visit in Tokyo!) C and these guys all became really close after working together the past six months. I guess that's what long hours in a restaurant will do!
Here Riccardo and C are just acting silly on Riccardo's motorino. :)

* Has anyone ever sent résumés the old-school way through snail mail? A friend told me this worked for her when she moved to New York so I'm hoping I get a few bites this way. If I were a Director of a company in charge of hiring, I'd like to open up an envelope that's addressed to me and read a cover letter and resume with my own eyes instead of opening up some lame attachment on an email.

* Watched the movie Stomp the Yard last night. As cheesy as it was, I still loved it! :)

* Every time I leave the hospital in Italy, I feel grateful. Today, after spending about 4 hours at a hospital with a student, I am grateful that I have (knock on wood) not had to have major surgery here. It's not as bad as in some countries, but I would never want to have a major surgery here. Fly me to Switzerland or England, please.

* In case you were wondering, only 14 days till we move. Five of our six boxes have already arrived at C's parents' house in CA.

* TGIF and have a lovely weekend!

Hey there, good lookin'

YES, I know I don't know what my living room will look like, what color the paint on the walls will be, or even the overall style of my imaginary house in San Francisco.
But I DO know that I had to have this coffee table that was recently posted on Craigslist. It's a white, wooden, distressed vintage-inspired table of love and it looks gorgeous.
Thanks, Ma, for picking up this table for me! You're the best!

Crafty

This Halloween, like most, there was a lot of scrambling for our costumes at the A's household. BUT, we hustled in time and if I don't say myself, it all came together pretty well :)
(We of course started the evening off with a little scary-movie-watchin'. What Halloween would be complete without being scared? We watched Paranormal Activity and loved it).
All we grabbed for my costume was some white cardboard and some print-outs from one of the most frequented websites in the WORLD. Can you guess what that is?

Facebook, of course!

Then, C helped me glue some blue construction paper along the top of the cardboard.
And I of course added REAL friends' photos with some made-up comments. :)

And ta-dah, I was Facebook, hanging out with a bunch of scary monsters and hippy 70's girls!
Chris shaved his moustache VERY thin, threw on a beret, a scarf and a blazer, and ta-dah and bonjour, he was a Frenchie.
(Oh and HOW can we forget the face?) He has the same face here..
here...

here...

oh.. and here!

I hope you had a Happy Halloween!!!

Weekly Home Inspiration

Check out some good ol' home inspiration from Design Sponge Online.
This is an incredible closet!

Drool, drool, and more drool. I love the funky wallpaper!

Oh and a hidden vanity set. Oh my!

And then there are these before and after photos of this great piece of furniture. Someone actually found it on the side of the road and turned it into this:

I want one a furniture project of my own!

Happy Friday!

Six Stars

* 22 days till' the move!

* I'm reading the book Infidel, which paints a vivid picture of fundamentalist Islam and the true story of a very admirable author Ayaan Hirsi Ali. Check it out if this interests you.

* I start training the girl who will be replacing me on Monday. :) and :(

* I've already started looking at recipes for Thanksgiving on the Pioneer Woman Cooks and man on man, am I getting excited. I'm thinking that I'll make the blueberry pie for the first time and the olive cheese bread that I made last year. (They're both on the website).

* I will be dressing up in a rather, ahem, strange-but-very-2009-appropriate-costume for Halloween this weekend and it will be easy and FUN nonetheless. :) Will post pictures next week. I'm glad that Halloween is on a Saturday night this year.

* Only 8 more hours till Friday (for me at least). :)

New Year's Eve.. Through the Years

The other day I started thinking about New Year's. Since we'll be adjusting to our new lives in California, it's going to work out well that we spend our New Year's in San Francisco again. I don't know who we'll be with or what we'll do, but I'm sure it will be a blast! As long as we are in good company, we will have a good time.

The photo above is from NYE last year, at our friend KK's ROCKIN' house party in San Francisco!
Below is an accumulation of all the NYE that C and I have spent together.

New Year's Eve 2007 was a fun one. We spent this one in Roseville, near Sacramento, at C's good friends John's place.

We did the same for 2006! John's house always guarantees tons of great food, dancing, and good memories with friends.

In 2005 we rented a house in Maryland with all of our friends from Barcelona. (Here we are trying to spell "crunk" because that perfectly describes our time in Maryland!)

Oops this photo is actually from 2003 and not 2004. Oh well.
Nonetheless, we were in New York City with our friends in 2003! This was C and I's first NYE together! (NICE hair, Principesssa). This was the year that we ventured out and went to an all-inclusive venue, which was fun. But C was sick and had to stay in. :(

And in 2004, here we are again, at the same house in Maryland that we rented in 2005.
It was perfect- it right on the water!

I guess we have the traditions of staying on "coasts" for NYE AND staying inside. EAST or WEST!? We prefer to stay inside and avoid the crowds that are on the streets and at noisy places filled with abnoxious folk. :)
