X-Files in Florence

Last week, C and I saw the most peculiar thing in the sky. Please see the e-mail that C wrote our local English newspaper in Florence that sums it up.

Hello, I know it sounds a bit like X-Files, but last night my wife and I were sitting on our terrace behind Santa Croce church and saw a bright red light moving upwards into the sky. Its size seemed a little bigger than a star. At first I thought it was a satellite or something of the sort orbiting the earth but then I noticed it leveled off and began moving faster. Two flashing white lights, which I thought were airplanes, followed behind it as it got closer and closer to our neighborhood. In it’s descension it began to take on the form of a cloud of red gas with something bright spiraling around it. It came closer and closer to Via ___ until it floated down on to the top of an apartment. At this point it had lost all of its color and appeared as a black, airless balloon. I’m an American living in Florence for 4 years, now and have never witnessed anything like this in my life. I don’t know where to begin to research it online in English or Italian. If your paper, which I read religiously, could research this phenomenon and possibly write an article on it, I would be very grateful to have this mystery solved. I don’t believe in all of the paranormal and the best I can come up with is that it was some sort of ball of gas.

Thank you very much for reading this odd email,

C

You might think we are crazy but we REALLY did see this! It was the freakiest thing we have ever seen. I didn't even want to tell people what we saw because I knew people would think we were nutso. No, we didn't take pictures but we wish we did! If anyone else saw this last Tuesday, June 16th, please let me know.
