I wanted to include a few quick hotel recommendations for Costa Rica in this entry. If you aren't going to Costa Rica any time soon, you might find this entry borr-ing but if not, just sit back and look at the pics at least!
Our first hotel was Hotel Grano de Oro, in San Jose'. It was an old restored mansion with a wonderful restaurant, shown in the photo.
The hotel restaurant was one of the city's finest. They also have an amazing little courtyard where you can dine al fresco! We loved this hotel and found the people to be kind and the service superb.
The rooms were spacious, clean and most of all, very affordable.
Next, we stayed at Hotel Arenal Paraiso in Arenal. We rented a jeep in San Jose' and drove there after staying for one night in San Jose'.
Overall, the hotel was good. The hot springs were nice, but there were a few things at the hotel that could have used an update, such as the decor and main swimming pool. It was fine for a few days but I wouldn't want to spend a week there.
Lastly, Ecoplaya was where we spent seven lovely nights. It's located in the far northwest corner of the region of Guanacaste, only about thirty minutes from the border of Nicaragua. We adored this hotel. We had our own kitchen, spacious bathrooms and bedrooms, and a p-i-m-p swimming pool and beach access. The beach isn't exactly swimmable because of the wind and creatures that we saw swept up on the beach. There were puffer fish and manatee but as long as you stay poolside you're fine! There are other really nice beaches only a mile or two away that are better.
For our adventures, we did ziplining at Hotel Arenal Paraiso, which according to our Lonely Planet was one of the best tours in Arenal. There were 12 different platforms/stretches of ziplining, and the views were amazing.
For the Twilight Safari cruise and white water rafting, we used Rios Tropicales, which I'd highly recommend.
That's about it for now. I'm so ready for this weekend and a little bit of R&R, as the Fredster would say. So far on the agenda we have a welcome reception for the students and a possible pool day for tomorrow. Holllerrrrr.
